What defines you?

Blessed is the man
,
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.

Psalm 1:1-2 (ESV)

To be blessed is to know God's favour and experience true happiness. This blessing comes from taking counsel from God rather than from those who have rejected his counsel, the wicked. It's important to know whose advice and counsel you are following and whether it is rooted in God or in human sin and rebellion.

Google Calendar to Twitter

For our Momentum men's events we have a Google Calendar that we use to manage the upcoming events, and this gets pulled into our website using the Wordpress plugin ICSCalendar. Recently I set up a twitter account as well, and decided that it would be useful to provide reminders of events on there, which people could then follow and receive SMS updates for.

Initially I had a look around to see what I could find, and came across Calendar Tweet, but that didn't do quite what I was looking for. Then I remembered smtp2web.com, which you can send e-mails to and it will post them to your website over http. So I set up our gmail account to forward the event reminders to my smtp2web e-mail address and built a PHP script to receive the content, parse it and send a nicely formatted message to twitter.

One of Abi's favorite games recently has been to pretend to be on the telephone, having a conversation with someone and then pass the phone around saying "I'll just pass you over to Daddy". Today when she passed the phone over to me, we had the following conversation:

Me (talking on the toy phone):

Hello?

Really?

Why did she do that?

Abi (protesting profusely):

I didn't!

I then compare the coordinates of the minibus with a set of bounding boxes stored in a database. If the bus is within squares defined in the database, then the pre-defined description is sent to twitter so that anyone following the bus can receive updates as to where it is.

I've been playing about with Portable Ubuntu for Windows, as a replacement for my secondary machine at work, and customised the system a bit for my liking. This is going to be a working post for me to add notes on what I've changed so that I can find it again! Initially I was planning to build my own image based on Cooperative Linux, but decided that as Portable Ubuntu for Windows had most things configured it made a better starting point.

After quite a while of not being able to print from our laptop to the shared printer on our XP desktop, I finally got it working last night thanks to my Dad.

Here's the instructions:

Make sure you can see the XP computer from Vista.

If you can't:

make sure the workgroup is the same (as the defaults are different)

In Vista, go to Computer, System Properties

make sure file and print sharing is allowed through the firewall - in our case we had to reset the firewall rules on our XP machine and re-add the ones we wanted for this to work:

Last weekend we went up to the O2 arena for the Strictly Come Dancing Tour and we had a fantastic day. Getting up there went really smoothly - the roads were clear and the views of the snow on the surrounding countryside was amazing. We got up there at about 11 o'clock and thought that we'd beat the rush and head straight to Nando's for
lunch - annoyingly they didn't open till 12 so we headed back to Starbucks for coffee and a snack to give us energy for the hour before we could eat! We then explored the 'Entertainment Avenue' and headed back to Nando's for lunch. We got in there first and were glad of that as we saw how big the queue was once we'd got our food.

At last our 12 week scan arrived. It had felt like it was a really long way, but it seemed to come round quite quickly once Christmas had gone. So this evening we finally got to see our new little baby, and it was wonderful.

It had been a bit worrying initially as we couldn't find the heartbeat with the doppler we'd rented and the midwife couldn't find it either when she tried on Tuesday. But all the other noises were as expected.
